Overview

We would like the views of local residents on a new management plan for Smestow Valley Local Nature Reserve.

Smestow Valley is a large area of natural parkland stretching across western Wolverhampton, from Castlecroft in the south-west to Oxley in the north. The site was declared a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in 1998.

In December 2012 a Conservation & Access Management Plan was developed, which prescribed a series of actions to ensure the future protection and enhancement of the ecological, social and educational value of the site.

A supplementary management plan has now been produced which updates the management practices proposed to be undertaken on the site over the next five years. The new plan includes 90% of the area formerly known as the Wolverhampton Environment Centre (WEC). The site has been allocated funding from the council and ERDF Blue Network Grant of £285,000,  which will see land having been set aside for wildlife and opened-up to the public as part of the adjoining Smestow Valley Local Nature Reserve. The remaining land which consisted of derelict buildings will be transformed into a small Passivhaus development, consisting of 14 family homes.

The Smestow Valley Supplementary Management Plan has been produced in accordance with the Tettenhall Neighbourhood Plan 2014 – 2016.
