Overview

City of Wolverhampton Council's Environmental Health Service are seeking your views on the implementation of a voluntary 'Cosmetics Complaince Scheme'.

The scheme is aimed at improving standards within the industry, reassuring customers and promoting compliant businesses to the public.

We’re considering introducing the scheme as we have seen a growing number of concerns around poor standards and high-risk procedures. These include an increase in complaints received from both the public and practitioners within the industry.

As you know, the Government intends to introduce a mandatory licensing regime for non-surgical cosmetic procedures in England. However, the date for this is yet to be announced. Therefore, until the mandatory scheme is introduced, our local voluntary compliance scheme aims to provide a level of reassurance to the public when they are considering cosmetic procedures.

Please note, the voluntary scheme will not replace your obligation to obtain a licence in the near future.

Why your views matter

In recent years there have been growing concerns around the safety of non-surgical aesthetics procedures. Procedures such as botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox), cosmetic fillers, skin boosters, chemical peels, and energy based treatments are growing in popularity.

The compliance scheme will focus on infection prevention and control standards, including facilities available within the premises such as access to a hand wash basin, clinical waste provisions, and cleaning chemicals. The scheme will also look at practitioner competence, including personal hygiene, personal protective equipment, and a review of your pre-consultation and after care procedures.

We are in the early days of developing the scheme and would like to consult with you on your thoughts and ideas. These will include whether you think there is a need for such a scheme, what should be included within our assessment and the scope of treatments.
