Wolverhampton Citywide Public Space Protection Order

Closed 29 Jun 2020

Opened 27 May 2020

Overview

The City of Wolverhampton Council would like your views on the renewal of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) prohibiting street drinking.

The PSPO, if renewed will apply anywhere within the boundaries of Wolverhampton local authority area. It will give Police (including Police Community Support Officers) the authorisation to require a person to stop drinking alcohol and surrender any alcohol in their possession where anti-social behaviour is occurring, or in the reasonable belief of the police officer, likely to occur.  Any person who, without reasonable excuse fails to comply with a police officer’s request commits an offence and may be liable to prosecution.

Under these proposals, the PSPO would also prohibit alcohol to be consumed in any public place anywhere within the wards of St Peter's and Park, which includes the City Centre. This will provide a more robust response within these locations and help to ensure public safety.

The initial PSPO came into force on 6th April 2017 for a 3-year period. Further consultation is required to determine whether the PSPO should be granted for another 3 years.  Since the PSPO has been in operation, it has helped to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour related to street drinking and increased public confidence. There has been an overall reduction in street drinking since the initial order came into force which the council would like to see continue to reduce by renewing the order.

We would welcome your views and comments on the proposals for the renewal of the PSPO.

Please note the consultation closes at midnight on Monday 29th June 2020.
