Overview

THE WOLVERHAMPTON CITY COUNCIL (BILSTON) (CHAPEL STREET) (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING FOR ALL MOTOR VEHICLES) ORDER 2023

The City of Wolverhampton Council undertakes an annual review of all road traffic injury collisions in the city to identify where and when collisions occur across our roads and to establish priorities for coming years.

Recent analysis showed that the junction of the A41 Oxford Street, Hare Street and Chapel Street had a notably high record of injury collisions. Further investigation showed that the collisions involved vehicles crossing the A41, with the majority travelling from Hare Street to Chapel Street. It was concluded that drivers are using the route as a short cut to avoid congestion elsewhere.

This information was backed up by a number of enquiries we have received from local residents complaining about vehicles taking short cuts and speeding in the vicinity.

A number of solutions were considered in order to address this problem and the most viable and effective would be the closure of Chapel Street between Bradley Street and Station Road. Consequently, a scheme has been drawn up and we propose to implement, subject to this consultation.
